The Season of Games – Part 2

Mini followup to my first post.

The Season of Games continues, 20 days later and I’ve finished one game (quite an achievement for me) and started to play two more.

Fallout 3 – (Completed) Was the first game of the season and I enjoyed it allot, very immersive experience with allot of really nice idea’s with only a few glitches and limitations to hold it back from perfection.  Took me 34 hours to complete and I think I skipped about 25% of the side quests (I can live with that), I actually completed the game at level 18 (max is 20) so missed out on the level 20 achievement points so after watching the ending I reloaded an old save and went back to level up so I could say its fully complete and move on.  I will probably go back and play the game again at some point (at a slower pace) as a bad female character to see what the dark side of the game is like.

Fable 2 – I’ve started playing Fable 2 now and so far so good, very similar to the first game but with some improvements and a few backward steps in interface controls. The game follows the same linear path with side quests thrown in to slow you down and let you gain renown (too make you more famous), these quests usually revolve about killing a number of something or getting something so will be familiar to any MMO players out there.

I started out the game fully intending to be a goodie but Mrs N took an interest in the game after seeing that you could wear fancy clothes and wear makeup in game…<sigh> so she is playing as a super goodie lady character so I’ve seen that part. My character is now shifting towards becoming a mercenary out to catch criminals and make money where he can and he’s joined the temple of shadows which is like a bunch of people playing at being evil (they get upset when you do really evil things near them).

Gears of War 2 – Really wasn’t expecting to get this so soon, was quite far down my list but Binny and some guy from work got it and kept raving about it so had to get it. Glad I did its a really amazing game, kind of the video game equivalent of Armageddon with huge set pieces and a good story. More on this after I finish it.

LittleBigPlanet - Not played this as much as I thought I would, I think its more a game I will dip into every now and again. It has allot of style and humour but for all its cuteness it is quite a hard and frustrating game later on. Its very old-school in its gameplay and while I used to spend hours dying over and over in Yoshi’s Islands last levels I don’t have the same level of patience now, so when I fall/slip off a platform into a firey pit for the 10th time I tend to stop playing and come back later (or never).

Call of Duty: World at War - Not much to say about the campain as I’ve not really played it, the one player game is very hard even on easy with lots of instant death moments.  The voice talent is amazing though with Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman playing your boss (American and Russian sides).  I got the game for the multiplayer mainly and level 21 now which is ok but seeing as I don’t have any time after all the above games its a miracle I’ve got that far.

Next in part 3 – Dead Space, Rock Band 2

Managed to finish Gears of War (within two weeks of getting it) I was thoroughly pleased with it. The sets and action are top notch, and the story and pacing are superb. It really wanted me to finished it, and it seemed rude not to. It is a real improvement on the first one. Not sure how much I will play it on-line, and I don’t think I will play it through again. Time will tell.

Fable looks interesting, I will have to take a look at it next time I’m at yours. Interested to see what all the fuss is about.

Got a chance to play LittleBigPlanet at the weekend. I really enjoyed it. Just what I was expecting, and surprisingly challenging. I am still very tempted to buy a PS3 just for that game. But I have to agree. I can see there would be annoying level (especially with the physics engine) and I’m sure the cuteness would ware off over time. I did like the idea of playing and rating other peoples levels… but one of the ones we tried was an example of why the general public should not make games. On the whole, still good though.

Yeah at the moment the bulk of the user made stuff is points and trophy unlocks or single gimmick levels (sometimes hilarious though).

One thing about Fable 2 you would like is you can never get stuck and not know where to go, in a slightly simple system your active quest is pointed out for you by a glowing twinkly line on the floor stretching off to the destination and clicking on the quest in your menu’s will teleport you to the closest location you have got to it. Slightly cheap feeling but it does work and far better than running the wrong way over and over.

See. That is something I need. I can’t stand it when someone in a game says go to “xxx” only for you to have no idea where that is. It takes to ages to walk there and find it. Then you have forgotten what it is you were doing
