Iron Man 2

iron-man-2 After what seems like a very long wait Iron Man 2 is finally out. I was very surprised with the first film. If there are two things I have never really got they are Robert Downey Jr and Iron Man.

I don’t know what it is that has never really worked for Downey, but is has certainly re-established himself since Iron Man came out. He can carry off the narcissistic Tony Stark like no one else, and is definitely fun to watch.

The concept of Iron Man itself is one of those comics that passed me by. Of course I know of Iron Man, and a basic understanding of the story but beyond that I really don’t know how Iron Man fits into the Marvel universe. Some of that history is coming out in this film, along with references to other films in production. I counted three, but I might have missed something.

So how does this one stand-up? In short it has its moments, but overall it does not have the same feel or impact of the first.

What’s happened?

This is still a great film! There is plenty of action and the effects are even better than the first film. But it just does not have that feel that makes the first film so much fun. In the first you have a very gritty opening and the growth of stark from a self-obsessed arsehole to self-obsessed super hero.

scarlett-Johannson-black-widow Here I didn’t feel there was much in the way of story. There were plenty of characters, and quiet a few of them were very interesting. From Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, or Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow but none of them had much time to do anything.

There was some action with them, and Black Widow had a chance to show her fighting credentials, but that was about the sum of it. Which is a shame because I was expecting something more between her and Iron Man.

While Nick Fury was there to push The Avengers idea into the film, again his character was never really explored in any way. Not really a surprise in this film I suppose, but a shame.

For me the star of the show has to be Sam Rockwell. He is always fantastic in everything he does, and again here he is stealing the show. But the film doesn’t give him the chance to do much more than just be a pissed off CEO who likes to shout and resent Tony Stark. But his scene where he is showing off his weapons is great fun.

The biggest let down for me was Whiplash. The scenes where he is not fighting are OK, passable. But when it comes to action there is just not enough. Even though the film is long enough, and plenty of time is given to show the characters. Nothing much seems to happen. I didn’t feel like I saw much growth apart from a tiny moment with Tony Stark and his dad that I thought was very nicely done.

Conclusion

There is no denying this is a good film. It is great fun to watch and the effects will make you smile. But there was a lot that I think could have been trimmed or at least taken in a different direction.

Get your popcorn and settle in!

Don’t forget you need to stay right to the end of the film. Get right through the credits and there is a treat waiting for you!

I know what you are getting at, it didn’t seem quite as good as the original, I think perhaps the pacing was a little slower but there were more than enough mark out moments for me to still rate it best film of the year so far (yes even better than Kick Ass IMO) and still an easy 5 stars for sheer entertainment factor alone. The War Mechine & Iron Man scenes really delivered and as you said, Sam Rockwell was fantastic, and the scenes with his character and Tony Stark in the same room were absolute gold. This film was introduced a lot of characters, both for this franchise and others and it did it’s job, while telling an Iron Man story and being a kick ass popcorn film.
    Highly recommended

For me I was pretty disappointed. It was a good film, but that was about it. Nowhere near as awesome as the first.

The beginning was out right dreadful and slow, and throughout the film was too much talk talk talk, well hey that’s what the first films are for, Iron Man is now establised we don’t need talk talk talk anymore. Sigh.

As far as I am concerned the makers were more concerned about making this has a stepping stone towards Avengers rather than making a solid movie, and that’s where they failed, quite badly. There was absolutely NO sense of threat in this movie whatsoever, I never thought ‘Oh no, this looks bad for Tony/Iron Man’. The fight between him and War Machine at the house party was utterly pathetic and I kept being reminded of Neo vs Agents post-super powers, BORING! or dare I say Superman vs non-super powered beings etc.

I absolutely loved Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow (Personally think she is 1 of the most beautifuly women in the world if not the most) and her fight scene was pretty awesome too, reminded me of all the long corridor fight scenes in movies (Watchmen, Old Boy etc)

Sam Rockwell was brilliant, I wish there was more of him.

Mickey Rourke was a tad disappointing as well, for a villain there actually was less involvement with him as I thought there would be. And how pathetic was the ending? I won’t say anything about it due to it being a huge spoiler was that was 1 of the worst endings I’ve ever seen.

I came out of the cinema very frustrated and annoyed, not about the film but more about the fact that I was split between the film being utter shit and utterly awesome, and I find that worse than anything else. All my friends felt exactly the same actually, it was quite a surprise since I normally have very different views compared to them.

Credits ending was a nice scene, sets up everything for the future quite nicely, and am definitely looking forward to Thor. Fingers crossed it SHOULD be better than this.

PS. I want a Black Widow (with Scarlett) movie NOW!

Totally agree with you. This film has promise, and I personally didn’t think it delivered. All the potential was there, with absolutely no goods. Which is a great shame because I thought Downey Jr was as good as the first, and Sam Rockwell is a stroke of genius.

The whole set-up for the other films was just plain annoying, especially the whole Avengers thing. There is a simple rule: If Nick Fury can’t advance the plot of IRON MAN (the film you are seeing) don’t put him in :(

I class this an ‘all shirt and no trousers’ film. Enjoy the effects, don’t think about it too hard.

Plus how would War Machine work? Tony would just press a button and the other suit would shut down (they even mentioned it in the film). Why would he let him steal the suit? No sense at all.

Not sure about Black Widow. She was OK, but flat. Didn’t do anything of any interest. To be honest they were all flat for most of the film. I was let down, personally though ‘Kick Ass’ was much more interesting.
