The problem with most shows is that they don't know when to quit! They are so hooked on making money they sail right passed the point that says "Stop here, this is the best you are going to be" and carry on passed "Boring" and on to "Tedious shadow of its former self". It is unfortunate this is what happens when you listen too much to the fans. "Red Dwarf" has to be a great example of that, it has long passed the point of no return and is now such a mess that I will never by that three part series from Dave, and if I never see it again it will be too soon. What about Buffy? Something I know is close to your heart. I don't see how Doctor Who can carry on without David Tennant, but that is different discussion.
If you look at the true classic programs like "Blackadder" or "Fawltey Towers" (can't think of anything Sci-fi specific, sorry) they are immortal because they knew they had nothing more to say. It's unfortunate that the dedicated fans that make Sci-fi great, is the very thing that makes Sci-fi fail.
I think Daniel Jackson should never have been in Star Gate to start with. I think the whole of Star Gate is over blown pap. Don't even start me on the massive pile of crap that is Babylon 5! The first three Star Wars films have forever tarnished the entire series in a way that can never be removed. Mediclorians my arse! Screw you Jar Jar!
But the very things I hate about those are the very things others love. I wouldn't deny people their love, I have enough strange ones of my own that mean I can't comment. But sometimes these shows need to stop listening to the fans a make a bold step, it will be hard in short term but if they believe in what they do the show will be better for it.
Don't you ever speak that way about Optimus Prime again! Optimus Prime is my god, and he arose from the ashes because that is exactly the sort of thing gods do.

I can't comment on the new Day of the Triffids as I haven't seen it yet but on the subject of characters being safe in shows, don't forget there's two sides to that argument. Many fans don't want characters to die even if it does shake things up and keep you guessing.
Stargate tried to kill of Daniel Jackson, he was supposed to be gone for good. The fans thought otherwise. You can go back further and not just in sci-fi, everything from soaps to cartoons has dead characters coming back because the fans want them. Was Optimus Prime supposed to come back, no. His animated death caused such an uproar Duke didn't die in the GI Joe animated movie. Outside of the Time Lord and his regenerations it is real difficult to kill of a character and keep the fans of a show from calling for them back. If the fans don't cause an uproar then it pretty much means you failed in the first place.
Thanks to the internet, keeping a character death quiet is pretty much impossible now anyway. Quite how anyone is supposed to keep you guessing as to who will survive in shows I don't know. I'm glad I don't have to try and figure out the answer to that.
