Wow, I remember watching Robotech when I was a kid, bought the pilot episode on VHS from a car boot sale, I friggin loved it! I couldn't find anywhere to get the next episodes though so I never got to watch the rest of it. I saw the Macross Plus films a few years ago, and loved that also. I plan to get around to watching them all, I just have so much I want to watch with such little time in the day to do so ;)

Agreed on Macross 7 for music, only just round to downloading all the soundtracks and Macross 7 has some awesome songs. The download I got also has some English versions of the songs its weird to actually hear the words (not better though).
Frontiers music is good but not M7 good :)

Good post, my opinions on each are:
Macross: Do you remember love? - Unmissable, should be compulsary before watching any other Macross.
Macross Plus - I'm a movie style version fan, the series seemed too slow for me.
Macross 7 - I agree it can be a grind to watch, it ends well, it's just a shame about the ridiculous amount of re-used footage and the number of disposable eps in the middle - it's all very unmacross-like. Still my favourite music of any Macross series, and up there with the best of any series period. J-rock at it's finest.
Macross Zero - looks good but is quite weird. Frontier makes brilliant use of this.
Macross Frontier - I can't heap enough accolades on, everything about it works and is done beautifully. Visuals to sound, refernces to previous stories and even it's own story, just marvellous. Also I want the toys which is the mark of a good anime (and in fact the point).

No worries grizz I knew there is more than one version and how Macross and Robotech were kind mixed up but wanted to keep it as simple as possible, true though yes Robotech is no macross...its just a mess. I would be there all day listing variants on that one story (which is what wikipedia is for), I think the lack of a single version was what kept me and prob Binny off the series. The film I found the perfect introduction its so well done, it shows its age but still surprises all the way through.

I've often looked at Macross and thought it looked good. But like so many of these types of series I just don't know where to start. This is a good list, I think I might start looking into it.
Love "Kishin Heidan" though, it was really well done. Just need to see what more they did with it.

The Super Dimension Fortress Macross is what got turned into robotech the Macross saga.
Robotech was 3 different series adapted by harmony gold with english voices a semi dodgy plot and lots of sticky tape this was then so popular it created demand and a market in the us for other forms of giant robot series such as gundam to get their break in the us.
Macross do you remember love is the film version of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, sorry to be picky but robotech is robotech and macross is macross.
For a full education on Macross chronology see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macross#Series_chronology
